What is the Subclass 485 Post-Study Work Visa?
The Subclass 485 visa enables recent graduates from Australian institutions to stay for up to 2 to 4 years after completing their studies. The exact duration depends on the qualification you’ve earned:
- PhD graduates can stay up to 4 years
- Master’s by research or coursework graduates are eligible for 3 years
- Bachelor’s degree holders typically receive 2 years
This visa is designed to help graduates transition into the workforce and is also open to those considering further education or regional migration.
Visa Costs
The application fee for the primary visa holder is AUD 2,235. Additional applicants (family members) will incur the following charges:
- Over 18 years of age: AUD 1,115
- Under 18 years: AUD 560
Please note that extra fees may apply for medical checks, police clearances, and biometric data collection. Fortunately, this visa is not subject to the subsequent Temporary Application Charge.
Are You Eligible for the Subclass 485 Visa?
To apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa under the Post-Study Work stream, you must meet these criteria:
- Be under 50 years old
- Hold a valid student visa (not sponsored by the Department of Defence or DFAT)
- Your first student visa must have been granted on or after 5 November 2011
- You must have completed an eligible qualification (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree)
- Diplomas or trade-level qualifications alone are not eligible
- You must have held a student visa in the last six months before applying, or currently hold a Bridging Visa A/B or another substantive visa
- Your course must be CRICOS-registered
- You need to provide proof of adequate health insurance
- You must submit evidence of having applied for an Australian Federal Police (AFP) check
- You must meet the English language requirement
- You must be free of debt to the Australian government
- You must not have had a visa cancelled or refused previously
