Temporary Partner Visa – Subclass 820

The Subclass 820 visa lets you live in Australia while your permanent Partner visa is being assessed. It also grants you the ability to work, study, and travel freely within and outside Australia.

  • Travel in and out of Australia without restrictions
  • Access to Australia’s public health system (Medicare)
  • Eligible applicants may attend free English classes through the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must be in a genuine relationship (married or de facto) with an eligible sponsor
  • Your partner must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • You and any dependent family members must be in Australia at the time of application and when the visa is decided

Cost & Processing Time:

  • Standard fee: AUD 9,095
  • Lower fee (for subclass 300 visa holders): Starts from AUD 1,515
  • Processing time: Typically between 5 to 23 months, depending on application volume

Permanent Partner Visa – Subclass 801

Once you hold a Temporary Partner visa (Subclass 820), you may become eligible for the Permanent Partner visa (Subclass 801), which allows you to settle in Australia indefinitely.

  • Ability to sponsor eligible family members for Australian visas
  • Unrestricted work and study rights
  • Access to Medicare and government-funded services
  • Travel rights for five years from the date of visa grant
  • Access to AMEP English language courses if eligible

Eligibility Criteria:

  • You must currently hold a Subclass 820 visa
  • Your relationship with your sponsor must still be genuine and ongoing
  • In general, you must remain married or in a de facto relationship during the processing period
  • For applicants under 18, the decision will also consider the child’s best interests

Processing Time:

  • Approximately 12 to 20 months from the date of application
